Mânăstirea Călui

Cine nu cunoaște povestea "Întâmplări de pomină văzute din Turnul Chindiei" de Dumitru Almaș... a pierdut ceva frumos în vremea copilăriei. Autorul povestește duelul dintre Stroe Buzescu și fiul hanului tătar pentru a decide soarta bătăliei dintre cele două oști fără mai multă vărsare de sânge. Duelul a fost privit, ca prin magie, de soția lui Stroe, doamna Sima, din turnul Curții Domnești de la Târgoviște - pentru că bătălia avea loc la Teișani, pe Valea Teleajenului, ascunsă de văi și păduri. Stroe iese învingător al duelului, dar este ucis până la urmă de veninul în care mârșavul tătar își înmuiase iataganul... Istoria românilor conține astfel de povești cu feți frumoși și zmei, pentru cine are curiozitatea și răbdarea să le descopere. Și nu, nu au nevoie să fie demitizate de Lucian Boia.

Mai târziu am citit poate cel mai reușit roman al scriitorului nemțean, "Frații Buzești", unde este evocată moșia Buzeștilor de la Călui, curtea boierească, o "culă bolovănită" și o biserică. Multă vreme am crezut că nu mai exista nimic din ele, dar am aflat între timp că meleagurile Buzeștilor se ascund undeva în Olt, la nord de Balș. O zonă sălbatică, fără semnal.

Când am sosit, primul lucru pe care l-am făcut a fost să ignor zburătura de nouă biserică a mânăstirii. Cum pot oamenii să ridice asemenea urâțenii lângă "vetrele istoriei românești", cum le numea Almaș?

Curtea boierească a Buzeștilor, astăzi Mânăstirea Călui, este surprinzător de bine păstrată. Este împrejmuită de ziduri groase de cărămidă, cu contraforți. În fața bisericuței vechi se află morminte boierești iar în pronaos sunt înmormântați Radu și Preda Buzescu, frații cei mari, morți în 1610 și 1608. Stroe Buzescu, mort în Bătălia de la Teișani din 1602, a fost înmormântat la Mânăstirea Stănești din sudul județului Vâlcea.

În mânăstire puteți admira un mare portret votiv cu toți Buzeștii (boierii și soțiile lor) precum și portretele domnitorilor contemporani Mihai Viteazul și Petru Cercel, cu familiile lor.

Călui Monastery

Romanians who don't know the story "Memorable events seen from Chindiei Tower" by author Dumitru Almaș... missed something in their childhood. It relates the epic duel between captain Stroe Buzescu and a Tartar Chieftain to decide the fate of the battle between their two armies without further bloodshed. Stroe's wife, Sima, standing on top of Chindiei Tower in Târgoviște, magically saw the battle, although it was happening far away, on the banks of the Teleajen river. Stroe won the duel, but died a few days later of his wounds, because the Tartar had treacherously dipped the tip of his sword in viper venom.

Romanian history has such legendary episodes, ready to be discovered by those fond of reading, and they need no deconstruction by modern historians like Lucian Boia.

A few years later I read perhaps the best novel written by Almaș, "The Buzești Brothers", recounting their lives from childhood to the death of Stroe in the duel. The heroic captains of Michael the Brave grew up on their domain at Călui, where they had their stronghold and their church. For a long time I thought they did not exist anymore, until I found out they were preserved as a monastery, Călui, close to the small town of Balș, Olt county. A back road leads to the monastery on a long forested valley. Cell phone signal is weak there.

When I reached the destination, the first thing I did was ignore the huge modern church built near the old monastery. I'm appalled at such disfigurement of Romania's most relevant historical sites.

The monastery itself, former boyar residence, is well preserved. The dwellings are protected by high brick walls with buttresses and the church is found in the middle, like in any boyar or princely dwelling of the time. The tombs of the Buzescu family are found in front of the church and in the nave. The most prominent are Radu and Preda Buzescu's, the elder brothers, who died in 1610 and 1608 respectively. Stroe Buzescu, who died of his wounds after the battle of Teișani in 1602 was buried at another monastery nearby, in Stănești, southern Vâlcea county.

In the monastery there is a large portrait of the Buzescu family, the boyars and their wives. The portraits of their Princes at the end of the 15th century, Michael the Brave and Petru Cercel (Pentru the earring wearer) are also shown, surrounded by Michael's family.
