Merghindeal este un sat cu nume pitoresc, ce mă face tot timpul să mă gândesc la fraza "Merg în deal" sau "Merg la deal". Nu este chiar greşit, dat fiind că, pentru a vedea biserica, trebuie să urcaţi un deal, iar pentru a o prinde cel mai bine în cadru trebuie să mai urcaţi şi mai mult până pe un dâmb deasupra ei. Numele său provine din germană: Mergenthal.
Biserica conţine mai multe rarităţi. Are o orgă funcţională la care se cântă la fiecare slujbă (multe orgi din bisericile săseşti necesită reparaţii şi deci nu funcţionează). În mijlocul bisericii este un puţ de apă: multe biserici au un puţ chiar sub biserică, folosit în caz de asediu, dar cele mai multe sunt înfundate. Cel de la Merghindeal are apă bună la un metru sub podea! De asemenea, în turn puteţi admira unul din rarele ceasuri cu mecanismul, pendula şi contragreutăţile funcţionale. Pendula e cât un stâlp de telegraf iar contragreutăţile sunt nişte pietroaie! Din turn se poate admira tot satul, iar după o colină se vede sătucul Dealu Frumos.
Merghindeal Fortified Church
Merghindeal is a village with a pleasant and funny name which resembles the Romanian phrase "going up the hill". The truth is that, to see the church, one does gave to climb a hill, and to get a better view one has to climb a little further to see it from above. The German name is "Mergenthal".
The church has unique elements. The organ is in working state and used regularly at the mass, unlike the case of many organs needing repairs. There is a well in the middle of the church, with water right under the floor planks. Such a well, in a good state, is rare today. It was the vital source of water in case of a Tatar siege, for example. In the tower we saw a working clock, with its giant mechanism visible.
The view from the tower is beautiful. Dealu Frumos village is visible in the distance.
