Podul Bizetz - Giurgiu

Bizetz Bridge

Bizetz Bridge, named after civil engineer Ion Ionescu Bizetz, allowed Giurgiu to develop from a medieval river port to a modern one.
Indeed, the old port of the town became too small around 1900 for the ships of the day and after considering several solutions and locations, it was decided to build a new port right on the Danube, linking it to the city with road, railroad and a new iron bridge. One of the authors was Angle Saligny, the builder of Cernavodă Bridge. The bridge was built in a curve because of the particularities of the terrain on the chosen spot, a first in Europe at that time.
You can see on the blog "Giurgiu through eyes that want to see" pictures of the bridge and a text in Romanian related to its construction.
