Ne aflăm în satul Măldăreşti, la sud de oraşul Horezu şi în apropiere de Mânăstirea Hurezi. Aici veţi găsi cele mai mari, frumoase şi bine păstrate cule din România: Cula Duca-Măldăreşti şi Cula Greceanu, precum şi casa memorială I.G. Duca, construită în pur stil vernacular.
Culele se află, aşa cum şade unor construcţii fortificate, pe un deal lângă sat. Cula Duca este înconjurată de un zid cu poartă înaltă. Silueta ei este inconfundabilă, aţi putut-o vedea în filme precum "Iancu Jianu" (scena în care Adrian Pintea sare pe cal şi iese vijelios pe poarta mare - impozanta culă Duca se află în fundal).
Cula a fost construită de Gheorghiţă Măldărescu la începutul secolului 19, când incursiunile turceşti peste Dunăre erau încă frecvente. Totuşi, poartă numele politicianului liberal Ion Gheorghe Duca (1879-1933) pentru că acesta a cumpărat moşia şi s-a îngrijit ca acest minunat loc, încărcat de istorie, să renască. Vom vorbi mai multe despre figura excepţională şi tragică a lui I.G. Duca în postarea următoare despre casa memorială. Interesant cum istoria veche, a haiducilor, şi istoria contemporană, cu evenimente cruciale pentru istoria secolului 20, coexistă la Măldăreşti.
Nu am putut vizita cula, fiind închisă câteva zile pentru scurte lucrări de amenajare. Nu ne-am supărat: vom reveni curând. În mod obişnuit înăuntru puteţi admira sobele şi stucaturile originale, precum şi mobilier vechi şi obiecte de artă ţărănească şi tradiţională românească. Oricum, nu neglijaţi să petreceţi un pic de timp pe iarba de la Măldăreşti şi să vă încărcaţi cu toată energia pozitivă emanată de acest loc.

I.G. Duca - Măldăreşti fortified boyar house în Măldăreşti
Măldăreşti is a village south of Horezu town and near Hurezi Monastery and the site of the biggest, most beautiful and best preserved fortified boyar houses (kule) in Romania. You find here the I.G. Duca - Măldăreşti and Greceanu fortified boyar houses and the I.G. Duca memorial house.
They are located on a hill over the village. The Duca kula is surrounded by a high fence and tall gate, its silhouette made popular in postcards and also old Romanian cape and sword movies with boyars and outlaws (the outlaws being the good guys).
The house was built by Gheorghiţă Măldărescuat the beginning of the 19th century, when Turkish raids accross the Danube were still very common. However, it is also named after the liberal politician Ion Gheorghe Duca (1879-1933) for it is this brilliant and elegant figure of Romanian interbellum politics that bought the estate and gave the fortified houses a second life, also building a modest and beautiful country house for himself. Ishall say more about this exceptional and tragic figure when I shall talk about his memorial house. It is interesting how old history with outlaws and medieval-style plundering raids coexists with contemporary history - crucial events of the 20th century.
The kula was not open - a small reorganization was taking place. However, I fully enjoyed the setting and the positive energy felt all around. Normally in the kula you can see an exhibit of old peasant and traditional household items and art objects.
