The Ugron Manor in Mărtiniș

I was striken by the Ugron Manor in Mărtiniș ever since I discovered it on the Monumente Uitate site. It looked different from all the others, with its delicate blue stucco ornaments or its strong base built out of boulders. On the same site I found out that it was built at the end of the 18th century by Pal Ugron and Simenfalvi Krisztina, in baroque style. I swore I would seek it out when I would be in the region and that's what I did when driving from Odorheiu Secuiesc to Sighișoara.
Mărtiniș is a nice village nestled in a valley. We went through the muddy alleys asking our way until we found the large white gates of the former domain. In the courtyard the manor awaited, resigned. We toured it, admiring it and recognizing the perspectives we knew only from pictures: the flowered Ionic columns, the solid stone steps and the more recent barns, quite authentic too.
We left. Then we had a stroke of luck: the caretaker of the place arrived and we had another tour, of the interior too. He was born in the manor decades ago, when it was perfectly habitable, and left it 15 years ago. Its misfortune is having 7 heirs, falling in disrepair because they can't decide on its fate and none are willing to maintain in on their own. Cursed be communism, the evil responsible for this and other disasters for built heritage. What it needs now is a saviour with some material means and a love for monuments.
"Oooh, what a pity!" we exclaimed. "Eh, if I had a buck for every time I heard this, I would be a rich man. Many have come over the years, they took a look and left. Some wanted to buy, but the family asks too much for it", our man tells us. Then he adds: "The Hungarian is no better than the Romanian, he lets it in ruins, a manor from the times of the Tatars!"
I am not comforted at all that others make the same mistake we Romanians do, not taking proper care of our historic heritage, I would rather Eastern Europe have the behavior of the French, meticulously caring for the monuments. What a huge waste!
We left, like all the others, leaving the Mărtiniș manor, with its roof half collapsed, to resist the following winters.

  1. An absolute tragedy - but great that you took the time to locate and view it and then blog. I enjoy your posts. And do my small bit occasionally with my own blog - www.nomadron.blogspot.com eg today's post on Campulung (although not with your eye for detail!)

  2. Thank you. I try to reach international readers as well so I am happy to read your comment. Unfortunately I have too many occasions to blog about monuments in a sad state in Romania. I hope public awareness can help improve the situation. I shall follow your blog too.
