While at the Sulina camp in the "ARC" program, I made a one day trip with my friends from Bessarabia, visiting the Delta for the second time (after the trip in Murighiol). The trip, from the mouth of the Danube at Sulina, crossing the Musura golf and to the famous Letea forest, was worth the whole 50 lei (we were 10 in the boat).

Eram vreo 3-4 bărci. / The group was made of 3-4 boats.

We left the town behind very fast.

We were able to admire the old lighthouses.

spirits were high and unionist chants were sounding

It was disturbing to see how the dikes we growing thinner and disappearing under the waves; I was also impressed by their length. I did not know they were as long, but the pilot explained to us that they were methodically extended for over 100 years.

Am avut plăcuta surpriză să văd pelicani, deși era spre amiaz.

I was pleasantly surprised to see pelicans, although it was almost noon.

Finally, the lighthouse at the end of the dike, which was visible from the Sulina beach as well.

finis terrae

At the mouth of the Danube, there is a wreckage, the "Turgut". It is firmly fixed in the sand banks. There was one attempt to wrest it free, but it failed.
The ship is named after Turgut Reis, the famous Ottoman admiral from the times of Sultan Soliman the Magnificent.

But let's get back to the Delta, and more specifically the Novaia Zemla island. Yes, just like the famous Russian island in the Arctic Ocean, only in this case it is a tiny island with a few grass strands. Its exotic name, "new land", was given probably by Lipovan fishers. It is quite frightening to find oneself like this, "drifting" at the mouth of the Danube river... Fortunately, the weather was great and we were with experienced locals.

We marked the moment with a hora, where the Romanian shores meet the sea.

The sand banks surrounding the island allow such an optic illusion: people walking on the sea.

Back tot he boats: we are crossing the Musura gulf! The water expanse is scary for such a small boat. The bottom can be seen in certain places, where sand banks were.

Towards the shore, a sea of water lilies like I have never seen before.

We enter the canals. Of course we had a Romanian flag with us!

Our captain. We owe him our beautiful trip. We were also lucky to have a covered boat. I recommend this, for trips during the summer time, with hat, sunscreen and maybe even umbrellas, because the sun is unrelenting.

The team, partly known from previous expeditions.

We soon reached the levy on the Letea bank.

We traded the boat for a 4X4.

Una dintre acestea. :) / One of these. :)

It was weird to see so much dust after so much water, but Letea is arid, at least in the summertime.

It is pretty deserted, too, but the fauna, both wild and domestic, seems oblivious.

Popas.

We were thrilled to get some chips, soda and sweets from the local store, for a well deserved pause. We were pretty hungry.

We arrived in Letea forest. It is fenced off to prevent the farm animals from entering. Wooden bridges allow the crossing of swampy areas. However, I probably had excessive expectations from Letea forest: it is beautiful, thick, but it does not seem to have those weird and extraordinary shapes I read about in books. In addition, I walked only a small portion, probably insufficient to assess the unique biodiversity of Letea forest.

I arrived pretty fast to an area with sand dunes, something specific to Letea forest.

Dune de nisip în Letea. / Sand dunes in Letea.

The last break was next to a salt lake, which appeared in one night, according to the locals, who consider it a miracle working holy place.

Amin"

"In 1970 this lake formed in the day Christ was resurrected. Who truly believes shall be healed through his faith. Amen."
