Despre / About

I enjoy travelling ever since my parents have taken me to see the world, at the youngest age. I have lived abroad in two countries, Canada (Montreal) and France (Marseilles and Strasbourg) and they remain dear to me. At 25, I lived mostly abroad and knew many regions far better than my native land. I was determined to balance this situation and purposefully lined up a number of destinations which I longed to visit: the Saxon firtified churches of Transylvania, the Danube Delta, the fortified boyar houses (cule) in Oltenia, the Apuseni Mountains, the Maramuresh region or the monasteries in Neamţ county.

I was always fascinated by places, and the people and stories linked to them. History is my passion and for me space and time entwine to tell the story of a country, region or town. When I was in school, I used to stare at geography and history maps in classrooms. The evolution of a space through the centuries fascinated me and Romania´s map seemed huge, with so many places to see, each telling a story. I still want to see so many places and tell about them.
Thus was born the idea for "Tourist in my country", renamed "A patriot's guide to Romania" in the English version, a name suggested by a friend, Ciprian. Traveling through Romania, I amassed a certain amount of pictures and lots of personal impressions. I wanted to share them with more people and also to promote some of the lesser known beautiful corners of Romania. So, coming back from a vacation in 2010 spent entirely in Romania, I started this journey, this blog and formed the idea to progressively visit my own country.

The idea is for Romanian citizens to discover or to rediscover their own country and to really learn to appreciate its beauties and national identity. Too often we forget the treasures laying on our doorstep.

Myself I see my country with a patriotic sentiment: I want it's national heritage to be known, protected and promoted, because the things we see today are witnesses of the past and are part of our national identity. This is why I shall talk about the history of the places I visit, mostly personal impressions and references to cultural or historical events, without pretending to substitute online encyclopedias. I also want my stance to be as objective as possible and respectful of all cultures in Romania, this diversity being part of its treasures.
I hope this blog will help you to better know this complex country that is Romania. I am thrilled and honored when I get appreciations for the posts written and am glad when foreigners visit the blog, justifying the English text. My greatest reward is finding out that friends or unkonwn readers have used my blog to plan a vacation or a weekend trip.
