V-am povestit cum la Mânăstirea Cozia, aflată la marginea drumului principal pe Valea Oltului, e multă forfotă de turişti şi credincioşi. Aşa trebuie să fi fost şi acum aproape 500 de ani, pentru că sătui de vânzoleala de la drumul mare, doi călugări de la Cozia, dornici de cufundare în rugăciune, s-au retras peste Olt, între stânci, în chilii săpate în piatră. Cu timpul li s-au alăturat şi alţi călugări şi aşa a apărut schitul şi mai apoi Mânăstirea Turnu.
Bisericuţa mânăstirii este foarte mică şi frumos pictată în exterior. În interior, braţele întinse aproape că ating ambele ziduri. În contrast, chiliile sunt impresionant de mari, construite în stil neoromânesc în perioada interbelică. În spatele bisericii se află morminte cu frumoase monumente funerare.
Chiliile călugărilor Daniil şi Misail se văd şi astăzi. Tavanul de piatră e înnegrit de fum, vântul intră prin orificiul ce servea de horn, culcuşul era probabil un braţ de paie... Gândul ni se cutremură imaginând viaţa austeră a monahilor veacurilor trecute.
Turnu Monastery
I was telling you about Cozia Monastery that it is quite busy, being on the main road on the Olt valley. It must have been the same 500 years ago because, tired of the bustling, two monks from Cozia, looking for more quiet and spirituality, have retreated over the Olt river in cells carved in stone. In time, they were joined by other monks and thus the skete and later the monastery Turnu (tower in Romanian) was born.
The monastery church is very small and beautifully painted on the exterior. On the inside, outstretched arms can almost touch both walls. In contrast, the (modern) cells are quite big, built in Neoromanian style in the 1930's. Behind the church there are graves with beautifully carved crosses.
The cells of the two monks, Daniil and Misail are still there today. The stone ceiling is blackened with soot, the wind enters through the small hole serving as a chimney, the bedding was prabably a wreath of hay... One shivers thinking of the ascetic life of the monks of older times.
