Schitul Ostrov

"Ostrov", termen de origine slavă, înseamnă insulă. Dacă insula de la Călimăneşti pe care se află Schitul Ostrov pare un pic ciudată este pentru că a fost înălţată cu mai mulţi metri din cauza barajului hidrologic de la Cozia. Acum malurile insulei sunt betonate iar vegetaţia este relativ tânără. Schitul, ctitorit la sfârşitul domniei sale de Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521), a fost salvat. Soţia lui, Doamna Despina, s-a călugărit tot aici.

Insula este un refugiu liniştit, podul se închide seara iar mânăstirea e încercuită de Olt şi de ziduri înalte. Bisericuţa este deosebit de frumoasă în interior pentru că picturile şi catapeteasma sunt foarte vechi. Par neschimbate de 500 de ani. În exterior pridvorul este din păcate închis cu geamuri fumurii (dar măcar nu din termopan). Protejează pictura dar arată foarte urât, de aceea am preferat să nu pun o poză cu biserica, ci cu uşa de intrare din lemn sculptat. Mie mi-a plăcut foarte mult.

The Ostrov Hermitage

"Ostrov" is a Slavic term, meaning island ("insulă" in the Latin Romanian language). Well, the island at Călimăneşti looks a little bit odd and artificial because it was elevated when the Cozia dam was built. Now the banks are bordered with concrete and the vegetation is still young. The hermitage, built in the times of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521), was saved. It has an important historical value, since the prince's wife, Despina, retired at this hermitage after his death.

The island is a quiet refuge, the bridge is closed at dusk and the hermitage is surrounded by the Olt river and its own high walls. The tiny church is very beautiful and the paintings are very old and well preserved. Unfortunately the front porch is closed off with dark glass which affects its otherwise graceful silhouette. It protects the porch and its paintings but looks ugly, I could not take a satisfying picture of the whole church because of it.  I prefered putting up a picture of the exquisite sculpted wooden door which I liked very much.
