Biertan

Biertan

Biertan is a large and once prosperous village. It once competed with Mediaş and Moşna for local supremacy, eventually losing the fight. It was however until the 19th century the bishopric for the Transylvanian Saxons. It boasts one of the biggest and most beautiful fortified churches, listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The famous Biertan Donarium was found nearby. It is an iron object with latin inscription and christian symbolistics, proof of the continuity of a latin and christian population north of the Danube after the Roman Empire retreated from Dacia.
