Parcul Natural Comana

Comana Natural Park

Comana Natural Park was recently formed, in 2004, given Romania’s obligations as EU member to provide broader protection for its wild flora and fauna. However, the natural beauty and value of this area, with its forrests, lake and marsh, has been well known for a long time. There are reservations for the burr or the peony flower inside the park; the peony is a local symbol of Comana.
I went inside Comana forrest twice. Two years ago I participated to a cleanup operation. I cannot really describe the beauty of the forrest itself. I want to mention the interesting fisherman huts I have seen. They are basically platforms built on stilts on the marsh water and with simple roofs made of reeds. A path of wood planks tied to wooden stilts lead to these crude shelters. They are now in a very poor state, with the roofs blown off and part of the wooden structure uraveled. They would need repair if not for the fishermen’s sake (I don’t know if they are actively used anymore) then at least as a part of the local heritage.
The recent walk I took was very brief because it was rainy, but I liked the gloomy atmosphere of the lakeshore.
I was looking to see more autumn colours, unfortunately the weather was not on my side.
