Edineț is the largest town in the north of the Republic of Moldova, having a population of about 15.000. It's the seat of the county with the same name, on the Prut river. The locals pronounce its name "Iedineț". In the interwar era it had the nice name of "Ediniția". I had the chance to visit it twice, once this summer, with the "Better living" caravan and again, purely by chance, a few months later. The pictures are from the second visit, when I had a couple of days with perfect weather and clear skies.

Like any town in the Republic of Moldova with some sense of pride, Edineț has a statue of Stephen the Great on its main boulevard, which is called Independence Boulevard.

The statue is a bit surreal in proportions. I'm curious who built it (and I shall give the information here when I learn it)

The town also prides itself with the statue of a roman she-wolf, with is pretty rare in the Republic of Moldova. It was installed by the town administration, which wanted to underline the latin origin of the Romanians. I know however that the Romanians in Bessarabia are perhaps more fond of Dacians than Romans.

The town doesn't have only statues with Stephen the Great and the roman she-wolf, these coexist with a statue of Lenin. It was once in front of the County council, but after 1990 it was pulled in the back of the building, towards the Vasile Alecsandri Public Garden. That's the way things work in the Republic of Moldova, regarding statues: depending on the times, they are brought forward or hidden in the thickets of a park. That's what happened to the statue of Stephen the Great in Chișinău. I could even say that the statues of Lenin and Stephen the Great move symmetrically in the Republic of Moldova: when one is brought forward, the other one is pulled back, and vice-versa. I just hope Stephen the Great shall never again be eclipsed by Lenin.

M-a impresionat foarte tare când i-am citit dedicația:
On the main boulevard, on the other side from the County council, I saw a small monument, but which immediately caught my eye, since it was a cross sculpted in medieval fashion. I was very impressed to read the text etched in stone:
"This cross was erected in the glory of the Holy Trinity and in the memory of Father Sofian Boghiu, born in Cuconeștii Vechi on October 7th 1902, who passed away in Bucharest on September 19th 2002. He entered the monastic life in 1926 and was prior of Antim monastery between 1950-2002. Member of the spiritual movement 'The burning pyre'. Political prisoner between 1958-1964. Martyrs: Father Alexander Dolișcinschi 1944, Nicolae Moroșan 1944, Nicolae Georgescu 1945, Father Nicolae Boris 1961"
Martyrs must be honored and the communities' memory restored.

Next to the County council is the Edineț Homeland Museum, open every day except on Mondays.

Right next to it is the Traditional Art Museum, with the same schedule.

On the Traditional Art Museum there is a plaque remembering the Roman conquest of Dacia. I have seen such plaques in other towns in Romania, especially in Transylvania, and I was surprised in a positive way to find one here.

On the main boulevard there are several rather big and interesting buildings, like this one, for example, with two reliefs. Unfortunately it is abandoned. It is the former town cinema.

Next to the Community center I found a billboard with the posters of a left wing party. In the Republic of Moldova, like in Romania, there are elections. The stakes are high - choosing the direction for four million souls: east or west. The answer: on November 30th, on Saint Andrew's Day, the patron saint of all Romanians.

There are billboards with political parties in town. Here, one promotes an European orientation. on the backdrop of a classroom full of cute and hard-working kids. Initially, because of the uniform with black vest, I thought they were dressed in traditional folk costume.

Another party has a social message ("This is how we grow Moldova. Well paid jobs. Protected families. Respected women"). The image used in the campaign caught my attention: the child is happy, smiling, embracing her mother. The latter, however, has a sad face. Unlike her kid, she knows life's hardships and her expression reflects that. Indeed, this is how people grow in the Republic of Moldova, right now: happy and careless while still children, but burdened and worried as adults.

The last billboard is not related to the elections. It is a commercial with a message that I like (A country united in the future). I spent only a few hours on the streets of Edineț, enjoying exceptionally good weather for November. The center of the town, the relevant part, you can cross it in a few minutes. However, it is worth visiting for its museums and for its main attraction: the Vasile Alecsandri Public Garden (soon to follow).
