Galaţi

Galaţiul vechi a avut mult de suferit în al doilea război mondial, oraşul fiind bombardat şi de aliaţi şi de germani pentru a distruge infrastructura portuară. Astfel, oraşul vechi nu trebuie căutat lângă Dunăre, ci urcând de-a lungul Străzii Domneşti, artera istorică a oraşului, evocată romantic de scriitorul Ionel Teodoreanu. Ea intersectează străduţe cu case vechi, cu grădini umbroase, unele îngrijite, altele în aşteptarea unor vremuri mai bune. Clădirile importante ale oraşului, precum Muzeul Judeţean sau Prefectura, construită după planurile arhitectului Ion Mincu, se află tot pe Strada Domnească sau în apropiere. Continuând plimbarea, puteţi vizita Catedrala Episcopală Sf. Apostol Andrei, opera arhitecţilor Petre Antonescu şi Ştefan Burcuş, în stil neoromânesc.

Printre personalităţile marcante ale Galaţiului se numără Costache Negri, paşoptist şi ministru de externe pe timpul lui Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Gălăţenii i-au făcut statuie. Domnitorul şi-a lăsat şi el amprenta asupra oraşului pe vremea când era pârcălab al judeţului Covurlui. Casa în care a locuit este astăzi muzeu.

Galaţi

Galaţi suffered a lot in the Second World War, as it was bombed by the Allies and later by the Germans to distroy its port infrastructure. Thus, the remains of the old town should not be searched near the Danube but along the main boulevard, Calea Domnească (the Princely Road), which appear in the romantic novels of Ionel Teodoreanu. It intersects old streets with villas and gardens, some well kept, others overrun with weeds and in disrepair. The main buildings like the County Museum or the Prefecture, the latter built by architect Ion Mincu (1852-1912) are found on this main boulevard. The Saint Andrew Cathedral is also worth a visit, built by architects Petre Antonescu and Ştefan Burcuş.

One of the prominent personalities of the city is Costache Negri, participant in the 1848 Revolution and foreign minister during Alexander John Cuza's regin - his statue can be admired in a green square.

Prince Cuza also left his mark on the city. the house he lived in as governor of the county is now a museum.
