The History Museum in Tutrakan

We found the History Museum in Tutrakan almost by surprise and we were lucky that the guide waited for us to complete the visit before closing. We were pleased to see that he spoke Romanian, from all those collaborations with Romanian history and archaeological museums. Also, on the museum building is a trilingual plaque. There is an EU funded cross-border program. "Common frontiers. Common solutions." Cool!
I learned a lot from the visit and my curiosity about the local history and about the Battle of Turtucaia were in a large part satisfied. It was also very interesting to see things from the Bulgarian perspective.
The visit started from the small lapidary at the entrance. Also at the entrance is an impressive image of the Battle of Turtucaia, it can help you identify the building.
I read with satisfaction about the Ottoman period in which raids by Romanian princes reached the southern bank of the Danube and Tutrakan itself. Then the Russo-Turkish wars, with the mention of the artillery duel Oltenița - Tutrakan in 1877.
Indisputably, the most interesting period is 1913 - 1940 when the town changed hands four times. Taken by Romania in 1913 at the end of the Second Balkan War, it is the setting of the 1916 Battle of Turtucaia, a surprising, horrific and humiliating defeat for Romania, a victory taking epic proportions for Bulgaria "The Tutrakan Epic". I looked with great interest the composite historic map in the main hallway, combining the Bulgarian successes of the First Balkan War and the First World War. The occupation of Bucharest is for instance represented by a Bulgarian soldier on the spot of the Romanian capital.
Then, in the interwar period, we can read about the Bulgarian resistance against the denationalization policies of the Romanian occupants who had renamed the region "Quadrilateral". That's a whole new perspective as opposed to the one we are used to: Romanians never fought wars of aggression. Well, the matter is disputed and there are major historians like Nicolae Iorga or Neagu Djuvara who recognize that the Quadrilateral episode may be a singular case of Romanian imperialism (I'll get back to te subject when we talk about Silistra).
Then came 1940, the Soviet ultimatum and Nazi diktat followed by the restitution of the province to Bulgaria, with exchange of populations, asked by Romania, to settle the matter once and for all; (some Bulgarians would have liked to continue pursuing northern Dobruja as well...) In the pictures from 1940 we can see proud soldiers welcomed by smiling locals. I can't help but think of the words of Nicolae Iorga "We gave back Bulgaria what was taken from her following the Balkan War (...) We must recognize that (...) we felt foreigners there."
