I wanted for a long time to take a bike ride in the Slănic region that I know very well, but I never got around to putting it to practice. It would have been very easy for me to take my bike (even in the car) or to take the train. This is the way it works with our dreams sometimes: we never get around to effectively realize them and we mistake in postponing.
The opportunity appeared, however, when Sabin proposed a tour from Câmpina to Ploiești. I dared to join the plan because, even though I didn't have experience on tours longer than a few tens of kilometres, and this one was hilly too, I knew the area very well and knew what to expect. I figured I would just push the bike uphill if things got serious - and they did!

For this tour I relied on the bike I had for 6 years now, a simple Rockrider 5.0 which costs about 500 lei at Decathlon. Having a simple (cheap) bike is the best way to make sure it is not stolen (the other one is having a lock on it). It's been 4 years I am riding it daiy - except in winter, and for the mobility and good vibes it gives me, I named it "Independence" (Sabin has the other bike)

We left Bucharest in the morning, around six, for Câmpina. The first stop was at Brebu, at the monastery. Built by Matei Basarab, for me it is a medieval monument of the greatest importance, that I shall write more about in a short time.

Next there was a climb that I feared a lot: Pietriceaua pass, with a village of the same name, "one of the most beautiful in Romania". Indeed, the area boasts beautiful vistas and a lot of picturesque peasant houses.

If it was hard uphill (pushing the bike, in my case), the downhill ride was no less intense. The speed was in excess of 40km/h where the road permitted, an incredible sensation.

I stopped more rarely than I would have thought for a bike tour. Sometimes, when travelling by car, I would stop by the side of the road to take a picture of a peasant house, but I stopped more rarely with the bike, so as not to lose my momentum. One of this stops was near this interesting looking cross monument.

Another stop was near this bridge over the Vărbilău river, just before entering Slănic valley.

Just as the Mizil - Urlați area is known as the "Wine Route", this area is known as the "Fruit Route" (but they make plenty of "plum țuica" as well)
From Vărbilău, we went to Slănic and had lunch at my mother's. It was a bit too copious for a bicycle tour, especially with the Piatra Verde hill coming.

View of Slănic from Piatra Verde (the green rock). I pushed the bike while Sabin managed to ride all the way up.

Nest was the Teișani forest and the superb plateau on top, before entering the village with the same name.

Traffic was very annoying in Vălenii de Munte and DN1A. In Văleni you can visit the "Nicolae Iorga" Memorial Museum, but we did not stop this time. In fact, the entire loop through Văleni would be optional, in my opinion, but it's true that there are some gains, like the museum (for who would want to stop for about an hour) and the views from Teișani and Poiana Vărbilău (pictured here). The curbs here were not as dangerous as I remembered, Pietriceaua remains on the first place.

When I descended from Poiana Vărbilău, I stopped for the first time to admire the stone cross at the crossroads. I see it every time I drive to Slănic and I am not happy that a few years ago an advertisement panel masks it from the opposite direction. It's literally sacrilege.

Also in Poiana Vărbilău there is a rustic bell-tower I like very much.

Opposite from the railroad crossing: this house next to which was built a new one. I hope they will keep the old one as well.

I knew very well the last portion of the road: Slănic - Ploiești through Plopeni. On this winding but beautiful road there are several houses I love and which fortunately were not torn down these years. Some are very old, yet functional.

Some seem fit for a museum (and not for demolition!)

This is my favorite, that you can easily observe while driving, because it is in a curb.

Another example, with a pair of roosters on the roof, for luck.

The final kilometres, here at the Găgeni railway crossing. Ploiești was not far now, with its train station. I was beginning to feel tired, we rode 100 km, but I held up better than I expected, especially with the hills.
I would not take on any route, it is clear that mountain tracks are beyond my physical capacity, but I demonstrated to myself that I can handle 100 km distances, even on hilly terrain. I hope to go on more of these!
