Călimăneşti - staţiunea

A doua jumătate a secolului 19. România era în formare. Societatea se moderniza. Elita politică şi economică se europeniza. Pe vremea aceea, elitele europene mergeau la băi. Germania avea băile de la Ems, Franţa avea Aix-les-Bains, Austria avea Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) sau ... Băile Herculane. Tânărul regat al României va avea staţiunea Călimăneşti-Căciulata, prima staţiune aristocratică.

Nu se ştie de când oamenii au folosit izvoarele din apropierea mânăstirii Cozia, dar de la mijlocul secolului 19, oameni de ştiinţă precum medicul Carol Davila,părintele medicinei româneşti, au studiat proprietăţile acestor ape. Astfel, micul sat Călimăneşti s-a transformat "peste noapte" în staţiune termală.

Vile somptuoase ale protipendadei epocii, pavilioane de băi, hoteluri, cazinouri, acestea mai pot fi admirate şi atăzi la Călimăneşti, deşi timpul şi deceniile de neglijare şi-au lăsat nemilos amprenta. Staţiunea se află la 2 ore de Bucureşti şi la una de Sibiu, pe unul dintre cele mai pitoreşti drumuri din ţară. Are multe atuuri pentru a redeveni ceea ce a fost, sau chiar mai mult decât atât. Şi încă nu am început să povestim despre celelalte mici comori ale zonei...

Călimăneşti - the resort

In the second half of the 19th century Romania was transforming, society was changing, the elite was becoming more and more european, moving away from oriental influences associated with the Ottoman Empire and its former dominance.

Like all elites, they enjoyed going to bath resorts. Germany had Ems, France had Aix-les-Bains, Austria had Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) or... Băile Herculane. The young Romanian Kingdom would have Călimănești-Căciulata, the first aristocratic resort.

It is not known when people first started using the springs from near Cozia Monastery, but at the middle of the 19th century, medical scientists like Carol Davila, a pioneer of Romanian medecine, studied their physical properties. Thus, the small village of Călimăneşti transformed into a resort almost over night.

Somptuous villas, bath houses, hotels, casinos, they can all still be admired in Călimănești although time and decades of neglect also took their toll. However, the resort is only two hours from Bucharest, one from Sibiu, on one of the most beautiful roads. It has a few assets in order to regain its former glory. And we have yet to talk about the other treasures of the area...
