Soroca

Prin mai, anul acesta, s-a terminat restaurarea cetății Soroca și foarte multă lume a mers la evenimentul de deschidere. Țin minte că era în weekendul de 16 mai, când la Chișinău a fost o uriașă manifestație unionistă, "16 mai uniți", pentru mine cea mai frumoasă de până acum.
Mulți prieteni de-ai mei din Chișinău au mers și ei în următoarele săptămâni, dar eu am scăpat ocazia. De fapt ei mergeau doar peste zi, pe fugă, iar eu voiam pe îndelete. Nu îmi place să fiu zorit la obiectivele istorice. Ocazia s-a prezentat din nou, la scurt timp.

The restoration of the Soroca fortress was finished this year and many people went to its grand opening. I remember it was in the weekend of May 16th, when in Chișinău there was a huge pro-union rally, called "16 more united". For me, it is still the most beautiful pro-union rally.
In the next weekes, many of my friends in Chișinău went to see it, but I missed the opportunity. Actually, they intended to make only a quick one day trip, and I wanted to take my time. I don't like to be rushed when it comes to visiting historic places. The occasion presented itself again shortly.

De la București la Chișinău sunt aproximativ 450 de kilometri și de acolo la Soroca mai sunt, aproximativ, 170 de kilometri, dar drumul este foarte bun, pe lângă Orhei și Florești. Sunt zone pe care le cunoșteam de anul trecut, din Caravana Tinerilor Moldovei "Trai mai bun" Soroca. Pe atunci prinsesem vreme proastă și cetatea închisă pentru șantier. Neprevăzut, eram din nou în locurile care mi-au plăcut atât de mult, la foarte puțin timp. Așa se întâmplă lucrurile, câteodată, și poate e mai bine așa.

From Bucharest to Chișinău there are approximately 450 kilometers and from there to Soroca there are 170 more. The road is very good, passing through Orhei and Florești. These are places I know from last year's Youths of Moldova "Better living" caravan in Soroca. The weather was bad, then, and the fortress was also closed for the restoration works. Unexpectedly, I was again in the places I appreciated so much, and only a short time had passed. This is how things happen, sometimes, and maybe it's all the better.

Acum vremea era excelentă și cetatea parcă nou-nouță, așteptând mai mulți turiști ca oricând. Dar despre principala atracție a zonei am scris mai multe în postarea următoare, pentru că vreau să vorbesc puțin și despre orașul Soroca.

Now the weather was excellent and the fortress looked like brand new, waiting for more tourists than ever. But I wrote about the fortress in the next post, since here I want to focus on the town of Soroca.

Orașul omonim cetății are aproape 40.000 de locuitori și ca atare este printre cele mai mari orașe din Republica Moldova și cel mai mare de pe Nistru, după Tiraspol și Tighina, care nu sunt controlate de guvernul central. Într-un stat în care puține aglomerații depășesc 20.000 de locuitori, Soroca este un oraș mare și rămâne, așa cum a fost întotdeauna, un reper istoric și demografic pe Nistru.

The fortress' namesake has almost 40.000 inhabitants and is thus one of the larger towns in the Republic of Moldova, the larger on the Dniestr river, after Tiraspol and Tighina. We can't really count these, though, beause they are not controlled by the Chișinău authorities (they are in the breakaway republic of Transnistria).

Orașul este întins pe malul Nistrului, în centru având plan grilă și câteva cartiere întinse pe dealurile dimprejur. Din păcate, deși străjuiește de secole un vad natural, la Soroca nu există punct vamal spre Ucraina, deși se putea observa, din cetate, un pod plutitor.

The town lies along the Dniestr river. Its center is built on a grid plan, the neighborhoods sprawled on the surrounding hills. Unfortunately, although Soroca guards a natural ford on the river, there is no cross-border passage, no customs house. There is a floating bridge, I saw it from the fortress.

Soroca are și un muzeu local, Muzeul de istorie și Enografie (va uma).

Soroca also has a local museum, the History and Etnography Museum (to be continued).

Pe bulevardul Independenței, dar și pe străduțele centrale, se află câteva case care atrag atenția, vechi conace sau case de oameni înstăriți.

On Independence boulevard, but also on the central streets, there are houses which catch the eye, old manors or villas.

Soroca are mai multe parcuri, printre care menționez Grădina Publică Petru Rareș (unde se află cetatea), Parcul Central și Parcul "Mihai Eminescu".

În Parcul Central se află nelipsitul monument pentru Ștefan cel Mare.

Soroca has several parks, among them the Petru Rareș Public Garden (where the fortress is found), Central Park and the "Mihai Eminescu" Park.

În apropiere se află și monumentul celor căzuți în Al Doilea Război Mondial, cu incripții în rusă și în română.

Close by is the monument dedicated to those who have fallen in the Second World War, with writing in Russian and Romanian.

Scrisul românesc este pe spate și am impresia, fiind un scris diferit, că a fost adăugat ulterior.

The Romanian writing is on the back and I think it was added later, because the writing is different.

Suprapunerea vremurilor: Ștefan cel Mare și simbolurile sovietice. Totuși, muchia monumentului este în stil românesc: funia, care simbolizează trecerea timpului.

Epochs overlapped: Stephen the Great and Soviet symbols. However, the edge of the monument is in Romanian style: the woven rope represents the passing of time.

În parc se află și alte monumente, majoritatea din piatră de Cosăuți, cariera nistreană fiind foarte aproape de Soroca.

In the park there are other monuments too, most from Cosăuți quarry stone, which is very close to Soroca.

Pe bulevardul Independenței, nu departe de cetate, se află și ansamblul monumentelor pentru cei căzuți în războaie. Ansamblul este ridicat recent.

Acesta este monumentul ridicat în memoria celor care au căzut în cel de-Al Doilea Război Mondial, așadar un monument distinct de cel sovietic.

On Independence boulevard, not far from the fortress, there is en ensemble of monuments for those who have fallen in armed conflicts. It was erected recently. 

This is the monument dedicated to those who fell in Word War II, thus it is a distinct monument from the Soviet monument described earlier.

Lângă se află monumentul în amintirea celor căzuți în Războiul din Afganistan din 1979-1989 în care au căzut soldați originari din întreaga Basarabie. Am văzut astfel de monumente în multe localități vizitate până acum.

Nearby is the monument for the soldiers from the Republic of Moldova who have fallen in the Soviet - Afghan War of 1979 - 1989. I have seen such monuments in many other places.

Right next to it there is the monument erected in the memory of the soldiers who fell in the Soviet-Afghan War on 1979-1989 in which many Romanians from Moldova lost their lives. I have seen such monuments in many other places.

Ansamblul include și un monument în memoria celor căzuți în Războiul din Transnistria din 1992.

Soroca are, în Parcul "Mihai Eminescu", o mică alee a clasicilor. Sunt busturile lui Grigore Vieru, Ion Creangă, Mihai Eminescu și Mihail Sadoveanu - pe ultimul nu l-am prins în acest cadru. Interesant că fiecare soclu și chiar fiecare bust este în stil diferit, dar toate îmi plac, fiind de factură romantică.

Soroca has in the Mihai Eminescu Park, a small alley with statues of the classics. There can be found the statues of Grigore Vieru, Ion Creangă, Mihai Eminescu and Mihail Sadoveanu - the last one is not included in this frame. It is interesting that each statue is in a different style, but I like all of them.

În Soroca mi-au atras atenția și două biserici, care se văd foarte bine din cetate. Ambele au cupole verzi ce se ridică deasupra caselor.

Further north is "Saint Dimitrios" church.

Pentru a ajunge la aceasta din urmă, am mers puțin pe jos (vreo 15 minute) și am ajuns și în zona de cartiere a orașului: marile, vestitele și cam tristele blocuri predominant albastre, întâlnite și în alte orașe din Republica Moldova...

O altă zonă a orașului este denumită "Dealul Țiganilor", Soroca fiind printre puținele localități din Republica Moldova cu o populație semnificativă de țigani, inclusiv cu case cu turnulețe, etc. Dealul se vede din centru și din cetate, dar pe acolo nu am ajuns.

There is a fifteen minute walk to this church. We reached the northern side of town with big residential buildings. They are predominantly blue and I have seen them in other parts of Moldova as well.

Another area of the town is called "Gypsy hill", since Soroca is one of the rare places in the Republic of Moldova with a significant gypsy community, including houses with elaborate roofs and towers, etc. The hill is visible from downtown and from the fortress, but I didn't go to get a closer look.

În drum spre biserică am văzut și o nuntă, la restaurantul "Soroca", probabil printre cele mai importante din oraș. Oameni la patru ace, băieții mai ales în cămașă albă - pantaloni negri, domnișoarele și doamnele în toalete cât mai îngrijite. 

Nu departe de restaurant este un magazin mare "Fourchette" de unde se pot face cumpărături mai serioase. Pentru a lua masa, se găsesc două pizzerii chiar lângă Parcul Central.

Cazări în Soroca sunt puține, cele mai cunoscute, pe internet, sunt Hotelul Central și Vila de la Nord. Ambele sunt foarte aproape de cetate, a doua e o zburătură ca aspect, dar condițiile sunt ok.

On the way to the church I spotted a wedding at the restaurant "Soroca", probably one of the most important in town. People were dressed to impress, boys wearing especially white shirts, black pants and ties, while the ladies wore elaborate dresses.

Not far from the restaurant is a general store, "Fourchette". You can do your main shopping there. If you want to eat, you can get pizza in the Central Park. 

In Soroca you can stay in two or three places, Central Hotel and North Villa (Vila de la Nord). Both are close to the fortress; the second looks ugly... but the lodging conditions are ok.

În partea de sud a zonei centrale se află piața, în caz că vreți fructe și legume direct de la sursă. Are de toate. Lângă piață este autogara, a cărei sală de așteptare este pictată de artistul Vasile Ceban. Pur întâmplător, l-am întâlnit în Parcul Central, avea la el și în acel moment un portofoliu de picturi. A intrat în vorbă cu noi pentru că eram singurii care ne comportam foarte turistic: fotografiam fiecare monument, etc.

South of the downtown area is the market, where you can get your vegetables and fruit. It really has everything for a healthy meal. Next to the market is the bus station. Its waiting room is painted by Vasile Ceban. We met him by chance in Central Park. He had his picture portfolio with him. He approached us because we were the only ones behaving like tourists, photographing every monument, etc.

Dacă mergeți la Soroca, nu uitați să urcați și la Lumânarea Recunoștinței. Este la intrarea în oraș dinspre sud. Este un loc deosebit de frumos și urcarea treptelor este ca un act de pietate, iar eu m-am bucurat mult că am ajuns din nou aici, la așa scurt timp după emoționanta vizită din caravana "Trai mai bun".  Soroca se vede foarte bine de aici, inclusiv cetatea, dar se văd și Nistrul și Ucraina până departe. Pentru o vizită în Ucraina, însă, mai e un pic de așteptat.

If you travel to Soroca, don't forget to go up to the Thankfulness Candle. It is at the southern town entrance. It is a beautiful place; climbing its stairs are an act of piety, and I was very happy to be there again, such a short time after the visit in the "Better living" caravan. The town can be seen very well from this spot and the fortress too. You can also see the Dniestr and Ukraine very very well. A visit to Ukraine will have to wait for a little while, though.
